Obituary

Philip Henry Sears, Jr. of Westtown, PA died suddenly Thursday, August 7, 2014 at his home. He was born in Duluth, MN on February 10, 1933 to Philip Henry Sears and Esther Ryden Sears. The family moved to Grand Rapids, MI in 1937, where Phil grew up.

He graduated from Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills High School in 1951 and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1955, with a BA in Business Administration. He was a brother of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. Upon graduation, Phil enlisted in the US Air Force and flew missions as navigator on a B-47 for the Strategic Air Command (SAC) based in Plattsburg, NY.

It was there that he met and married his wife of 45 years, Eileen Tompkins Sears, who predeceased him in 2003. After leaving the Air Force, he was employed by Scott Paper Company for over 30 years, living in Detroit, MI, Chicago, IL, and Durham, NC before settling in Westtown, PA. Phil was a member of Fairview Presbyterian Church, Glenmoore, PA, The West Goshen Lions Club, and served as a Westtown Township Committeeman. He was a dedicated Scout Leader of Chester County Council, Boy Scouts of America and a Vigil Honor Member Order of the Arrow.

He is survived by his two sons, Arthur T. Sears of Woodbury, NJ, and eldest son Philip H. Sears III of Glenmoore, PA with his wife Brenda and daughters Katherine and Diana. Phil is also survived by his sister Karen Sears Sheldon of Hanover, NH as well as several nieces and nephews and their families.

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service honoring him at 11:00 am, Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at Fairview Presbyterian Church, 800 Fairview Rd., Glenmoore, PA with a visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Interment will be in the adjoining Fairview Presbyterian Cemetery.
